3,000 year old rice current variety
Rice grains, supposed to date back to about 3,000 years ago at Den Citadel relic site in Hanoi’s Me Linh District, are in fact a current rice variety, scientists said at a seminar held by the Agricultural Genetics Institute on Tuesday.

National demographic database to be established
A national demographic database will be set up and supervised by the Ministry of Public Security and local public security forces.

Viettel to cut mobile phone tariffs
HA NOI — The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has approved a proposal from military-run mobile phone service provider Viettel to reduce phone tariffs by 10-15 per cent, starting a new charge reduction race among providers.
The reduction will be applied to its post-paid subscribers with charges set for a basic package of VND890 per minute for internal-network and VND990 for internal-network calls, VND100 lower than previous levels.

NIST researchers grow nanowires made of semiconductors -- gallium nitride alloys -- by depositing atoms layer-by-layer on a silicon crystal under high vacuum. NIST has the unusual capability to produce these nanowires without using metal catalysts, thereby enhancing luminescence and reducing defects. NIST nanowires also have excellent mechanical quality factors.

Largest freshwater fish on verge of extinction
The population of the Mekong giant catfish has plummeted 90 percent in just two decades and the species are at risk of extinction, says a new WWF report.
According to the report titled River of Giants: Giant Fish of the Mekong, the world's biggest freshwater fish and four out of the top 10 giant freshwater fish species can be found in the Mekong River, which flows through Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
But their existence has been threatened by a combination of infrastructure development, habitat destruction and overharvesting, the WWF said.

Vietnam rubber exports down in volume but up in value
According to General Custom Office, rubber exports in June, 2010 reached approximately 60 thousand tones, valuing 164 million USD. Since the early this year, this is the highest level both in volume and value. Earlier, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said the rubber sector in May met some difficulties due to lower imports from China- the biggest rubber market. Rubber exports in May, 2010 fell by 26% in value from the previous month.

Gov’t sets aside US $72 mil. for hydro-meteorological observatory system
PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng lately agreed a plan to spend VND 1,391 billion (US $72.8 million) on bettering Việt Nam’s hydro-meteorological forecast system in a three-year period.

SHTP starts work on second phase
HCMC - Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP) Authority on Wednesday started work on phase two to expand the park in District 9 a further 613 hectares, in addition to the first-phase area spanning 300 hectares, which is nearly full. VN"s agricultural sector to go hi-tech
Viet Nam is set to phase out small-scale agriculture through the introduction of new technologies to agriculture that are expected to result in higher yields and more competitive farm produce.
The plan, part of a newly approved Government scheme to industrialise the agriculture sector, has targeted an annual growth rate for the sector of more than 3.5 per cent up until 2020 – it currently stands at 3.2. The Government is heralding hi-tech farming as the path to reaching these targets while ensuring national food security in both the short and long terms. Total value of produce from the high-tech sub-sector has been targeted to reach 10-15 per cent of total agriculture production in the next five years, and 30-35 per cent by 2020.
